Kirsten has a long record of fighting for LGBTQ families. Here’s just a small look at some key moments in her career as a public servant:

2007 Supported the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, expanding the definition of hate crimes to include anti-LGBTQ bias
2008 Received the Human Rights Campaign’s endorsement for re-election in the House of Representatives
2009 Became one of the first senators to support marriage equality when she was appointed to the Senate
2010 Spearheaded the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, securing the first ever Senate hearing
2011 Championed LGBTQ families as the lead sponsor of legislation which would remove barriers to adoption
2012 Supported adding protections for LGBTQ people to the Violence Against Women Act
2013 Cosponsored and voted for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
2014 Introduced the Restore Honor to Service Members Act to allow LGBTQ members discharged under DADT to have records corrected to reflect their service
2015 Co-sponsored the Equality Act to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination nationwide
2016 Secured national monument status for the Stonewall InnCosponsored the Real Education for Healthy Youth Act to ensure LGBTQ-inclusive sex education
2017 Fought Trump’s transgender ban with legislation to allow transgender service members to serve openly
2018 Cosponsored the Student Non-Discrimination Act to protect LGBTQ students from bullying, harassment, and discrimination
2019 Earned her first presidential endorsement from the Stonewall Caucus chair of the Iowa Democratic Party

Led the 2020 field as the first candidate to publish a comprehensive LGBTQ Rights Policy Agenda

Was the first presidential candidate to declare support for a third gender option on federal IDs
